Five easy ways to boost your health this winter

With the cooler weather well and truly here in the Southern Hemisphere, today I’m sharing my top five easy ways to boost your health this winter and keep your immune system strong. 

1. Load up on vitamin rich foods

During the cooler months, we are much more susceptible to germs and nasty bugs. Eating a diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants will help keep your immune system strong.

My top tip is to load up on foods that are rich in Vitamin C like citrus, red capsicums and kiwifruit. Just one orange or kiwifruit a day contains your daily Vitamin C requirements.

During your weekly meal prep or planning, try making up a big batch of vegetable soup or a casserole packing it full of organic veggies and the benefits of antioxidant rich foods,

2. Focus on gut health

A whopping 80% of your immune system is located in your gut! As soon as Winter hits, I start dosing my family up on fermented foods. Where possible, I incorporate them into our diet in as many meals as possible. Foods that feature in our daily diet include; keffir, kombucha, fermented veggies and bone broth.

2. eat warming foods

During the cooler month support your digestive system by sticking to warm nutrient dense foods like soups, stews, slow cooks and porridges. They’ll be plenty of time to crank that blender come summer, but for now give your digestive system the rest it deserves and nourish it with warming foods.

One of my favourite go-to recipes are my Slow Cooked Lamb Shanks.

3. Spice things up

Add healing spices to foods and drinks to gain the wonderful immune boosting benefits. Spices such as tumeric and ginger have long been used in traditional cooking methods for their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

One of my favourite ways to use these spices is to add freshly grated ginger and tumeric to my morning hot water with lemon. Not only am I boosting my metabolism by I’m gaining the wonderful health benefits of these healing spices.

4. Refocus your exercise

Winter is the perfect time to try out a different form of exercise. Maybe a heated yoga class, an indoor circuit or gentle walk in nature (or during your lunch hour). The important thing is to keep moving!

Whatever you choose, just be mindful not to go overboard. Too much strenuous exercise releases the stress hormone, cortisol,  which can weaken the immune system and undo all of your good work.

5. Prioritise Rest

We all know how much better we feel when we’ve had a proper nights sleep. Lack of sleep can seriously impact our immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching colds.

Where possible prioritise rest by create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as soaking in an epsom salt bath, doing a ten minute meditation or gently stretching. Switch off your computer, Ipad and phone and prepared your body for rest. You can read my top tips for a better nights sleep here.
